I am not my skin

Posted in Group:

hey there...i read this post and man does it sound like me. I have had acne since iwas 11 as well, now that I am older...IT HASNT GONE ANYWHERE!!!! As a matter a fact, it has gotten worse no matter what I try.I'm at the point of acceptance as well. The acne causes social isolation because people stare and make comments, no matter if they know me or not..Im working with a counselor on "Acceptance"...

I am glad you are working with a counselor on 'acceptance'...I do understand what you are going through....know that everyone usually has something, often many things they are insecure about that may not be readily apparent.
I believe in both acceptance and empowerment at the same time- so while you are learning to accept you for you at the same time dont give up on the idea of making things better also...these thoughts actually can go together very well, they dont have to be a paradox. Acceptance is about being the present with acne, while empowerment is about your hope for the future and what you are doing now to work towards this...it gives you the energy to try new things.
Im not sure how old you are now or what you have tried as well- have you seen a nutritionist, changed your diet for up to 3 to 6 months? Another thing you may want to try is relaxation techniques- try googling this. I like deep breathing and progressive relaxation. Remember to treat yourself with kindess and compassion.

Warmly,
Kellie Montgomery< LMFT
